There is life before and after a D’Angelo show (past experience y’all… 4th of July, 2012, HOB, L.A. Devoya knows), so I already knew in my heart that The Second Coming Tour held the promise of being life altering.
Front row center, with the unveiling of D’Angelo and The Vanguard, I was the happiest HBG in the room. That night we witnessed D’Angelo, cloaked in Black Messiah and Voodoo and Brown Sugar, experiencing what I recognized as deliverance. His heavenly, princely falsetto, that permanent beaming smile, and his commanding double encore (which included ‘Another Life’ and a 15min. version of ‘Untitled'(How Does It Feel)) overflowing with joy upon joy, told me so. D’Angelo was free.
In the end, sweet deliverance took the form of a solo, D’Angelo on the rhodes, still singing the adored chorus “how does it feeeeelll!” This solo took shape and form as one by one, each Vanguard musician and vocalist parted ways while the song continued, the crowd outpouring with mad love for each goodbye. And that moment when Chris Daddy Dave left his collossol drum set to embrace D’Angelo center stage, before departing, did my heart good. Too rarely do we see brothas lifted and loved as we did in that very space in time.
When I’m telling you it was all love and gratitude between the music maker and us, believe me it was, D’Angelo returned my blown kiss with his own.
P.S. The only thing missing was you, best HBG sister friend, Devoya. Next time we’re finding a way to roll together, cause field trips just ain’t the same.
P.S.S. I somehow managed to steady my excitement and record this snippet from ‘Another Life’.
And Ooooh SNAP!!!!! Here’s ‘How Does It Feel’ … video courtesy of Stephanie, my SD music partner <3 <3 <3 Yeah… we collectively lost our minds.
