Today, marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech as well as the historical March on Washington. At 3 p.m., more than 300 U.S. churches, schools and historical monuments will “let freedom ring” as bells echo around the world in celebration of a powerful moment in civil rights history.
This past weekend I was able to attend the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington in D.C. Having family members who attended the march 50 years ago, I not only wanted to go, but felt it my responsibility to do so. The experience was life changing, inspiring, and quite frankly, beautiful. I got to meet some amazing people, hear wonderful speeches, and visit the MLK Memorial and Fredrick Douglass House. The highlights of my day would definitely have to be marching behind the Martin Family and meeting William Allison, who still had his original sign from the March on Washington 50 years ago. Days later, I’m still in awe. I still struggle to find the right words to describe what is sure to be something that I will never forget. -Valz
