Granted, I haven’t felt goosebumps since the 80’s, when the King of Pop had us all take a look at the Man In the Mirror, but I’d be terribly remiss if I failed to share the good news from this year’s Awards . . . the portion which unfortunately was not televised.
Back in 2012, I was introduced to the music of a phenomenal jazz/funk-esque group, Snarky Puppy, by way of my good friend, Stephanie. (Side note . . . y’all may remember from a previous HBG post that Stephanie and I also saw The Robert Glasper Experiment late last year. You know how we do.) Short story even shorter, sOLStarr* and friends found ourselves at The Mint witnessing their serious musicianship, while we sweat it out on the dance floor.
This past Sunday, Snarky Puppy won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance for ‘Something‘ feat. Lalah Hathaway. This beautifully sophisticated arrangement threaded with Lalah’s unparalleled vocals (sista girl tears it UP!) is something to celebrate. Below you’ll find the award winning live performance, recorded at Jefferson Center in Roanoke, VA. This performance is included in the first volume of CD & DVD recordings, dubbed as “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy to benefit the Center, which also houses a Music Lab utilized by local children. Love love love that!
