Lotus: Literature of the Unsung Sistas.
In all my days I never thought I’d ever come across anything as lovely as this. A book club for teenage girls with a purpose. While scanning their website I also came across the reading list for the club. Check this out y’all.
LOTUS will read books by people of African descent from all around the world such as
- Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart
- Octavia Butler’s Kindred
- Sharon G. Flake’s The Skin I’m In
- Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions
Seriously?!!!! Sorry…but the nerdy book worm part of me feels like this is exactly the kind of thing I would have wanted as a young girl. I was blessed to grow up during a time when books by us / for us were plentiful, but I basically read whatever my mama read. Luckily she was in to Ntozake Shange and Maya Amgelou but not everyone has that kind of experience. Having the likes of Chinua Achebe in my summer reading rotation would have been amazing, and with this project, LOTUS will make that possible for some very lucky young women.
Looks like the good people behind the idea are hosting their first meeting tomorrow at the Louisville Public Library. We wish them well and will continue to follow the process via their website and facebook page. Click said links and take a look around. Also, if your pocket book allows click the donation page and help these sistas foster some learning too. Thank you Lotus!!!! – devoya
