Vinyl Sunday – Jeanius

Jean Grae | Jeanius

Jean Grae | Jeanius

Artist:  Jean Grae

Album:  Jeanius

Release Date: July 2008

Music:   Jean Grae is a woman who hopefully needs little to no introduction.  She’s one of best emcees on the planet as far as I’m concerned.  I also have no problem professing my love of her to anyone who will listen.  Jeanius is a solid and definitive body of work that consistently gives the listener track after track of great music. It’s raw, intimate and at times, painfully honest.  All of which leave the listener with the feeling that they have a better understanding of who Jean Grae really is.  While she certainly is the star of the show, producer 9th Wonder is not far behind with his soulful, sample-heavy production.  The sound is consistent and it’s obvious that the pair compliment each other.  In fact, I think they need to make another album together.  Soon!  A few of my favorite tracks are “My Story”, “Love Thirst”, and “The Time Is Now.”

Design:   Jeanius came equipped with four different album covers, all of which paid homage to classic hip-hop cover art. For the vinyl release, Jean and 9th Wonder channeled Das EFX’s 1992 album, Dead Serious. The idea and execution were simply genius! I immediately lost my cool the first time I laid eyes on it. Anyone even remotely familiar with 90’s hip-hop can tell you how important Das EFX’s debut album was to the genre. They had a style and sound that were all their own. The album cover to Dead Serious reflected that as well. The artwork is clean and simple, but the images are bold and leave a lasting impression. With bright colors and a very distinct logo, the Dead Serious album cover was a direct reflection of the times. In fact, some might even call it an artifact. To me, this is what the 1990’s looked like. Throw in a couple of scratches for that vintage feel and replace Das EFX with Jean Grae and 9th Wonder, you have one of the dopest album covers of all time. It’s definitely one of my favorites. – Valz
